Army Secretary Eric Fanning is headed to Rio de Janeiro for the closing ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Summer Games as part of the U.S. Presidential Delegation, the White House announced Friday.
Fanning will join six others, including Liliana Ayalde, the U.S. ambassador to Brazil, three-time Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee and retired NBA player Jason Collins. The delegation will be led by Gina McCarthy, administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The closing ceremony will take place Aug. 21. The seven-member delegation also will attend athletic events and meet with U.S. athletes.
Fanning’s selection to the delegation reflects the Army’s representation at the Olympics, the Army said in a statement.
The Army has 14 Olympians and three coaches representing Team USA at the Olympics and Paralympics. The soldiers represent multiple Army components and units, including the Army Reserve, the Army World Class Athlete Program and the Army Marksmanship Unit.

This sort of information should not be published ahead of time SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. This increases the security requirement in an area where at least one ISIS-friendly terrorist cell had its plans disrupted already.
While it is good news that the Army Secretary is traveling to the closing ceremony of the Olympics, I prefer to learn about while it is happening than well beforehand.
