I have no doubt that our forces can get it done Andrew, the question is will our politicians let our forces do it?
This is not a comment against any single politician or party, it just seems that when we make progress or gain ground on any objective, our Government gets scared because of "complaints", and puts a muzzle on our troops.
As an opinion, if our Government would let our military fight the battles, then we would never have to worry about this question being asked.
It's a great question, by the way. I read this story before I saw your question, and it was the first thing that came to my mind as well.

SPC Andrew Griffin - Spec; A large part of the problem is that "the politicians" have never quite decided what the job that they wanted "the military" to do was.
Another part of the problem is that "the military" simply isn't equipped for "nation building" nor is it equipped for "nation running" while "the politicians" simply haven't a clue how to go about "nation building" and don't want to dirty their hands with "nation running" (because that would make them look like crass colonialists).
IF, as in Germany and Japan after WWII, either Afghanistan or Iraq had had a functioning government which could be "cleaned" (like the "de-nazification" farce in Germany of by ignoring reality as in Japan) the possibly the US government would have been able to get them back onto their own feet. The unfortunate fact is that NEITHER Afghanistan nor Iraq ended up with a functioning government and the illusion of one had to be created from scratch in order to present the illusion of victory.

From the first 10 million dollar check Truman wrote for the war in IndoChina (Vietnam) in 1950 to our complete out of there in 1975, 25 years. Now Iraq from our efforts in the Iran-Iraq war in 1980 until now 36 years we have been involved. Man we are some dense people.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - PO; I suspect that the amount of "American Armed/Financial Intervention" would be significantly reduced if the following two questions were answered "Yes." (PROVIDED that the answers were honest):
[1] "Do those people want to be just like us in every possible way and, if not, are we willing to let them be the way that they want to be no matter how unlike us that is?"
[2] "Does the government of those people actually support and foster the values/rights which we proclaim to be 'universal' and 'inalienable'?"
BEFORE any commitment of "Armed/Financial" intervention was entered into.
