The Colonel's Motivational/Inspirational Quotes and Message of the Day and Week!
Today is "Horse" Day!
"A horse is the projection of peoples’ dreams about themselves – strong, powerful, beautiful – and it has the capability of giving us escape from our mundane existence." – Pam Brown
"Riding a horse is not a gentle hobby, to be picked up and laid down like a game of Solitaire. It is a grand passion." – Ralph Waldo Emerson
"Courage is being scared to death… and saddling up anyway." – John Wayne
"The horse, with beauty unsurpassed, strength immeasurable and grace unlike any other, still remains humble enough to carry a man upon his back." – Amber Senti
"If you are fearful, a horse will back off. If you are calm and confident, it will come forward. For those who are often flattered or feared, the horse can be a welcome mirror of the best in human nature." – Clare Balding
"Horses change lives. They give our young people confidence and self-esteem. They provide peace and tranquility to troubled souls, they give us hope." – Toni Robinson
And so it is that...
“Equine Therapy of horse therapy can assist veterans in becoming calm, it can prepare veterans for sobriety, and it can help them regain their strength!’" — COL (Ret) Mikel Burroughs

“On this fine day the message is about horses and equine therapy. Horses and humans have been close companions for centuries. Their steadfast and hardworking nature has made horses an invaluable asset to farmers, pioneers, and manufacturers. Not only are horses extremely reliable, making them a great coworker in various industries, but they are also very loyal and loving. Due to this trustworthy temperament, horses have long been seen as companion animals and are able to provide veterans who are struggling with PTSD with emotional support as well as physical aid. That leads me to this quote…
‘Nothing compares to the therapy a horse can give.’ – Unknown Author
May you have the knowledge and experience to share with veterans and first responders you know that the goals of horse or equine therapy helps them develop skills such as emotional regulation, self-confidence, and responsibility; may your mind, body, and soul be opened to grace, goodness, peace, forgiveness, and a continued bountiful life of purpose; and keep your family safe, secure, happy, and healthy.” – COL (Ret) Mikel Burroughs

I lift those who train horses, ponies and elephants overseas to aid the disabled and those who train animals to sooth the tormented veterans and service members afflicted with PTSD and TBI including to YOU LORD. By YOUR grace YOU guide the mind of each trainer, volunteer, and veterinarian and YOU bless the hands of each to help the equine and similar animal trainers including alpacas. I pray that YOU protect these animals from being abused by thugs as well as rustlers and horse thieves. ‘Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. [Colossians 3:12-14 ESV]
I pray for sufficient fruit of the Spirit self-control, goodness, peace, for each of YOUR adopted sons and daughters who reads this prayer or hears it dear LORD. I pray that each of us are able to confess to YOU and to those You guide us to confess to, repent as necessary of active thoughts and words, words we should have spoken, and forgive those who offend us with grace and mercy. 'Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’ [1 Peter 5:5 ESV]
As Memorial Day is next Monday and many of us have memories of friends and fellow service members who have been killed in the line of duty. I pray for peace and ability to rest and sleep peacefully for each of widows, widowers of service members, brother and sisters, sons and daughters of veterans and police, deputies and federal and state agents who have been killed in the line of duty. I pray that YOU guide each prayer warrior to intercede for the grieving and for peace this Memorial Day. ‘Cornelius stared at him in fear and asked, “What is it, Lord?” The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have ascended as a memorial offering before God. [Act 10:4 ESV]
I pray that you and your family members sleep well Friday night and will awake refreshed and healthy on Saturday morning.
By the power and authority of the Name above all names, Jesus the Christ.

Horses like dogs teach us much about ourselves. Unlike dogs, they are not quick to accept us; we have to work for their trust and in doing so, we learn much about ourselves. I got to see how this all works at an equine center and I was very impressed by what I saw and heard from veterans involved.
Patience, managing one's emotions, learning to trust...all kinds of good things come out of working with horses (and animals in general). It takes a lot of work to get some of the more difficult ones (both two and four legged) to trust enough to work together.
