Leaders take responsibility for their actions and those of their subordinates. In the movie, "She Wore Yellow Ribbon", John Wayne's character, Cot Nathan Brittles gave an after action report. In it he stated that a mission was a failure. Another person said he had not failed that lots of other things caused the failure. He replied "Maggie, I've never put a coat of whitewash on any thing and I'm not about to start now". He took responsibility for his inability to get the mission done and didn't blame circumstances or subordinates. I could follow that leader.
