Good morning Col Burroughs. I can always tell pretty quickly when someone comes to me for counseling if they see themselves as a victim or as a survivor. They often both come for confirmation but one comes from a position of increasing strength while the other from weakness. It takes courage , strength and determination to move from one state of being to the other and I sometimes find that people are unwilling to invest in themselves to get there. And that's what it is: an investment in oneself. Are you invested in yourself? Are you a victim or a survivor?

Unfortunately, our country suffers from people who have a victim mentality. They can't do anything for themselves and are dependent on others to do everything for them. They riot, loot, and burn our cities all the while whining about social justice and completely oblivious to the injustices the perpetrate on others who have nothing to do with them. : /
I think they are victims by choice, because it beats being responsible and having a job. They'd rather vote for a living than work.
Being a survivor IS a choice. We expect life to be fair, but it isn't. Life doesn't give everyone the same talents or opportunities, but you play your hand with the cards you're dealt and do the best you can with what you've got. In poker, you can win with nothing in your hand, or you can fold.
I admire people that don't complain and who always do their best regardless of the circumstances, and regardless of who's watching! I'm pushing 60 and I don't feel that old. My cousin is 58 and she has had a very rough life. When she was young she was this skinny little thing. She was bubbly and always laughing. She comes from a poor family and has always worked low-paying jobs her whole life but she has always worked hard. She's never asked for help but we help her out. She did landscaping jobs on the side to pull in extra money. Nothing in life was ever handed to her on a golden platter. She's had to earn everything she's gotten throughout life. Even though she has had a lot of stress put on her, she dealt with it and shielded her family from that worry.
Last year my cousin was diagnosed with CLL (a form of leukemia that has no cure). Her husband (a former Army warrant officer who got out and became a cop) has stress-related health issues. Life has always been an uphill struggle for them. He recently got a job as head of security for a hospital chain and now has benefits and health insurance. Her medical bills were stacking up and they might have lost their house had he not landed that job. Last week, her colon ruptured and she almost died. The doctor said it looked like someone took a shotgun to her insides. She had several holes in her colon. Now she has a colostomy bag to deal with. I ache for her because she wore a tank of RoundUp on her back and it leaked on her for 15 years. She got CLL as a result of exposure to Glyphosate (the active ingredient in RoundUp), which is a DNA mutagen. Monsanto will tell you that it's harmless as table salt and that it's just a dessicant but tell that to her. She believed it, and now she's paying for it.
Despite all that she's been through, not once has she felt sorry for herself. Not once has she said, "Why me?!!" How many of us would handle adversity with the grace that she has? SHE! has literally been through hell, stares death in the face every day as she battles CLL, and has made a choice to be a SURVIVOR!

I guess that having an opinion is a fault everybody on this planet has. We all go through life always thinking of the best way to do things and by God, in a war zone their are sure a lot of opinions, on which route to take, what equipment to carry, or even the best way to defeat an enemy force, I prefer the decision making process. All have the right to right to put in their two two cents (opinions) which might have 100 ways to do things. Many have their own way in approaching issues or problems. I see opinions as a toolbox, you look inside of it and try to figure out which tool you are going to use.
In the civilian world, there are many people who live happy lives and many like Jeff said, have a victim's mentality. To make things clear, the Victim mentality is an acquired personality trait in which a person/s tend to think or consider themselves as a victim. If that is the case, we are all victims. during the WWl, WWll, Korea, Vietnam, a person that is harm, injured, burned, killed in an accident or murdered, had a accident and the list goes on, are all victims
The bottom line is, all mention above were victims. Here is where we separate victims from hoodlums, criminals, killers, scammers, and people who take advantage of others or just hurt others and they burn loot and more just because they can. Then like Cpt Jeff Schwager put it, they come out whining about social justice and are completely oblivious to the injustices they perpetrate on others who have nothing to do with them. One thing is for sure, once your heart stops beating, your were either a victim of a crime, KIA in wars, or murdered in the streets all across this country. Like LTC Charlie posted above, being a victim is not by choice because it's a random act, but over coming it and moving foreword is survival!
