From what I have read, the reason Longstreet was hated in the South after the Civil War was that he became a Republican and that he wrote a book in which he criticized Gen Robert E. Lee's decisions at Gettysburg. He was shunned and never rehabilitated during his life. Col John Mosby (the "Grey Ghost"), who never surrendered his command (just dismissed his men at the end of the war) was likewise hated and shunned in the South because he became Republican and befriended Grant after the war. He became a U.S. diplomat and was eventually rehabilitated after his death.

"rehablitated" seems a strange word to use, Mosby and Longsteet became rehabilitated long before their deaths, outside of those that were fans of the "lost cause"
