This series of 3 short articles gives a concise description of crusader history. Most simple Western descriptions end at "good crusaders killed the bad Muslims. End of story."
It's far more complex than most think, though easy to follow. The crusaders were far from saints--they were brutal, pillaging murderers who slayed innocent Christians, Muslims, and Jews. The Muslim world was severely disunited at this time, when they would've otherwise obliterated the crusaders.

Pope John Paul II apologized about 16 years ago to the patriarch of the Greek Orthodox church for the slaying of at that time Catholics in Constantinople. the patriarch of Greece clapped and happiness because it was over a thousand years a bitterness toward killing fellow Christians. The Taliban and Isis are the extreme of like the Crusaders and Templars were then.
