The Day Villanova Shocked Georgetown

Great moments in Sports History; Villanova's shocking upset of Georgetown Hoyas in the 1985 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship! The Hoyas, consistently ranked in 1984-85 at #1 overall, were upset 66-64 by the Wildcats, who utilized Dean Smith "4 corners" ball control and a phenomenal 78.6% shooting percentage from the floor and 22-27 from the free throw line and were led by Senior Ed Pinckney, a 6'8' power forward. The Hoyas, led by Patrick "The Beast From The East" or "The Hoya Destroya" Ewing, a 7'1" absolute monster in the paint. Ewing would be called for five 1st half goal tending fouls that were a factor in the loss. Villanova was not ranked that year in any pre-season poll, and came in 4th in the Big East overall with a record of 23-14 which only garnered them a #8 ranking in the West Division of the NCAA Tournament. The Villanova players dedicated the win to their longtime Team Trainer Jake Nevin, who at that point was confined to a wheelchair due to the ravages of ALS.
