I find it so appropriate that he was a junior officer in the attack of the 21st Lancers on the disorganized forces of the Mahdi in the Sudan in 1898, an attack that ran into an undisrupted infantry formation in a ravine and had to cut their way put of a very bad situation. Somehow, Churchill riding in one of the very last "lance and sabre" charges in world history seems too good to be true.
