Actor Kirk Douglas, once known as Captain Matt Yelland in the movie "The Final Countdown", was an honorary CO of USS Nimitz CVN-68 passed away at the age of 103!
Military Veteran Kirk Douglas joined the Navy in 1941, shortly after the United States entered World War II, where he served as a communications officer in anti-submarine warfare aboard USS PC-1139. He was medically discharged in 1944 for injuries sustained from the accidental dropping of a depth charge. Rest in Peace.

I well remember this movie. One of the better sci-fi films with a fine cast and interesting premise based on time travel. For fans of Kirk Douglas, I highly recommend his biography, The Rag Pickers Son

I was one the crew serving aboard USS Nimitz CVN-68 on December 7, 1980, the date we traveled back in time... ah yes, those were the good old days.
"This is the captain, I am speaking to every man aboard this ship. In the past few hours many things have happened; rumors of nuclear attacks and a third world war are totally untrue. We have no reason to believe that any aggression has been taken against our homes our families. I believe what we stumbled across is not man-made but a phenomena of nature, one that can't be explained. This phenomena is the storm in which the Nimitz went through less than 18 hours ago, the storm has had some effect on time as we know it, it created a portal, a door into another era. Today is December 7, 1941... I'm sure we are all aware of the significance of this date in this place in history. We are going to fight a battle that was lost before most of you were born. This time, with God's help, its going to be different... Good Luck."
