I found this to be a fascinating article which addressed some of the institutional and cultural barriers to effectively fighting suicide in the Army. Based on your past and present experiences in the Army, does the Army as an organization have an effective suicide prevention policy? Have you found (or observed) the various mental health resources to be effective and beneficial for troubled Soldiers? If not, do you have any specific recommendations for reform?

Some of you may drink and I have a problem with it. I have a problem because I have a lot of Alcoholics in my family and one of them was my sister who committed suicide two years ago. We should also discuss for those who have addictions to drugs alcohol cigarettes and such to stop it and seek treatment. Those drugs and alcohol and give them the fools courage often to kill themselves. Other social programs and help groups yes should all be incorporated in that with follow-up but I believe sobriety is one of the main keys especially for those people who are vulnerable to alcohol and drugs

Am I correct in assuming that this fine General's efforts didn't go unnoticed but that the article failed to focus on the fact that his founded poor decision with his classmates' contract is what caused his demise-not his emotional comment? Overall, the article was very good because it taught me a lot of the background of our current behavioral health programs. Thanks

I was at Bliss during this time and even met the good General on a couple occasions. I remember the ramped up suicide prevention/mental health initiatives at the time.
