Popular Mechanics shares an interesting look at the history of the C-130 Hercules. The design team was led by Lockheed aeronautical engineer, Willis Hawkins, who later designed the M1 Abrams tank, and they determined the size of the cargo hold by drawing a circle around a tank. The tank was the largest piece of gear the Army would need to airlift so if the C-130 could hold that in its cargo bay everything else would fit as well. The C-130 continues to enjoy the longest continuous military aircraft production run in history as it still flys in many countries around the world today.
BTW, fun plane to load, reasonably easy to do load balancing on, unlike some others.

Extraordinary aircraft, Lt Col Charlie Brown! My parents were good friends with Joe Dabney, who wrote Herk: Hero of the Skies, a definitive history of the C-130 when it was first published in 2003. I still have their copy which was a third edition and autographed by Dabney.
