Good article and I agree with most of it, but not all of his suggested changes. I've been pointing out for awhile that 1. The US hasn't fought a conventional war in over 30 years, and 2. The Russians have adapted to the lethality of modern warfare much better than the West and Ukraine. The first thing that has become obvious is that the battlefield is now commanded by whom ever has the best surveillance and the ability to send long range strikes and/unmanned platforms to hit the depth of the battlefield. So missiles, drones and long range artillery are more useful than tanks, attack helicopter and even fast movers.
I disagree about urban warfare, or at least his concept of it. If you look that the strongpoint defenses of cities like Mariupol, the Russians just demolished it block by block after encircling the city and slaughtered the defenders. I don't see a way around urban warfare, but we need to rethink of the way we deal with built up areas.
I do agree that we need to educate military officers to the current Russia. We got rid of the old Soviet Experts and now base policy on the views of people that have little or no knowledge of the history or culture of Russia.

This is pure rubbish. The author is wrong on many counts. For example, he eschews conventional war. Ukraine needs more conventional war capacity against the Russian military. I give his essay a D and am appalled West Point published that. I can go on and on, but don't feel like writing my own essay.
Ukraine absolutely needs fighters, bombers, helicopters, and armor for deep strike capability because it gives them flexibility in choosing the time and what direction to attack from. Those weapons systems are needed at the vicinity of the Russian forces for volume and accurate fires. That can't be replicated 20, 50, 100 miles away from Russian forces. Battles are usually won and lost when opposing forces are relatively close to each other duking it out.
If you don't believe me, then let me illuminate what transpired in Desert Storm. Our bombers did a number on the Iraqi Divisions stuck in the desert. We even told them when we were going to bomb them next with flyers to f@ck with their minds. However, the real slaughter occurred when our Amor/Infantry Divisions with A-10s, and Apaches, conducted movement to contact that was hundreds of miles deep to engage and destroy the Iraqi military. That finished them off. So yeah. This author doesn't know what he is talking about! lol

I see #1 and #2 being played out in the middle east...closer to the way the future will be.
