The legacy of Reconstruction reverberates. So why aren't students learning about it?

Because teaching about Reconstruction would mean accepting that whites continued being oppressors after the Civil War.

If you look back a bit at education you will find that about the time standardized testing to evaluate student progress showed up many traditional subjects were cut back or disappeared. There are only so many hours in a school day and teachers are forced to teach what will earn their schools a grade rather than provide a balanced education. Need I mention which side championed standardized testing?

Teachers are forced to teach to the dumbest kid. I hate to use that term, but it's the truth. When this happens, the smarter kids get bored. Their minds are not being challenged once they learn what's on the standardized tests.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen There is a lot of truth to that and a lot of it was also driven by the desire of accountability for teachers in NCLB. Education is always hard to do right because everyone has their own idea of what is most important and as you say there are only so many hours in the day.
I served on a school board a while back and I remember getting new (usually unfunded) education mandates and us trying to find creating ways to shoehorn them into the things we were already trying to teach the kids. It wasn't easy and it was a thankless job because no matter what we had to kick off the back of the boat there were always some parents who thought it was more important and attended meetings to yell at us.

Because they are not learning anything right now that has any use. Homeschooling is a great choice.

Not if you want someone who can function in society. There is more to education than book learning and homeschooling is severely lacking in providing social skills, trust me I've seen it first hand and posted about it.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen - I don’t think studies back up your impression of home schooling. Can you cite any studies that support your position? https://ies.ed.gov/ncee/edlabs/regions/west/Ask/Details/31

I know you didn’t look at the studies, first study clearly states “Home schooled were retained and graduated at same level as traditionally educated students. Another study indicated home schooled students had less depression. Do you have an studies that refute these findings?
