From what I have read it was not very common but some women would cut their hair off and then bind their breast to their chest and enlist with their husbands/boyfriends. The overwhelming majority of the women were discovered. I imagine that there were a lot more than we will ever know about that did the same thing and never were discovered.

If I remember my history correctly there was a Chinese female admiral who was a pirate. She was very successful.
