I recall a movie from the forties entitled 'Tennessee Johnson' starring Van Johnson and Lionel Barrymore which clearly showed the bad blood between Johnson and the Republican party but didn't reveal the true reasons for it. Lincoln didn't care at all for Johnson but knew he was well thought of in the South so selected him to aid in the work of healing the nation by using Johnsons' influence to bring the Southern states back into the fold as it were.
Due to the untimely assassination of Lincoln, Johnson took over as if he were a Democrat president duly elected by the popular vote rather than some one who came in through the bathroom window.
He was a disaster as a President and only made matters worse between the Northern and Southern states which have taken a century to reconcile and to a degree, are not yet behind us.
Thanks for this post, David and have a great day!

Great, informative post. The problem with impeachment is that you get the next in line

Right you are, Charlie.
In this instance, that would have been Schuyler Colfax who had served as the speaker of the house for the six years preceding this event. He became VP upon Lincolns' death.
Though he was the founder of the Republican party, he was accused of receiving bribes from the Railroad industry while serving as the speaker. He was never impeached or tried due to lack of sufficient evidence but there was sufficient evidence to create a preponderance of doubt and he left politics.
