Just because. Cool pic of USS Tennessee bombarding Iwo. The next time some sad Army guy posts the inevitable "Normandy was the largest invasion ever" thread, remind him that it was 2/3 Commonwealth forces and the US had only two RCTs landing at Omaha and one RCT landing at Utah.
The landing at Iwo had 2 Marine Divisions landing abreast and one in floating reserve.
The gunnery department of USS Tennessee developed a technique where they would cover the assault craft with their anti-air 40mm guns as they approached the beach. That must have been fun to see.
