The National Guard can do it, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea

I agree with the Author that just because the guard can do it, does not mean we should. National Guardsmen and women were transported from all over the country to support the election. What is the expense to support that? Its nice to have MP brigades at your beck and call, but did you need units from all over the nation for this mission? Do we need the national guard to guard active duty bases after 9/11? Did they need the man the border for multiple years? With the reduction of deployments are there not enough AD units to fill the roles for deployments now? From my perspective, it appeared that the Guard was tapped continually while some AD units never did anything. That is my perspective.

Internal CONUS operations are, quite literally, what the National Guard is for. This might be the first time they're doing what they're supposed to be doing. NG in CONUS makes sense. NG OCONUS does not.

Here are some stats, as to which bases were guarded remains classified for obvious reasons. This report to Congress in 2005 sheds some light on Reserve support to Operation Nobel Eagle (ONE), Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF): Between September 11, 2001 and February 16, 2005, a total of 477,709
reservists (which includes the National Guard) were involuntarily called to active
duty under federal orders for ONE, OEF, and OIF. Of these, 179,445 were serving
on active duty as of February 16, 2005, while 298,264 had been demobilized prior
to that date after completing their tours.7 Note, however, that the total mobilization
and demobilization figures count reservists more than once if they have been
mobilized more than once. The total number of individuals mobilized is therefore lower than stated above, and probably by a significant margin due to the number of
people who have been called up more than once.8
Also, some members of the National Guard have been called up to perform
duties related to ONE in a non-federal status. Additionally, in 2001 and 2002,
thousands of members of the National Guard were activated at the order of their
respective governors to provide additional security at airports. They were called up
under Title 32 of the U.S. Code, which means they were under state control, but with
federal pay and benefits.10 These distinctions have a significant bearing on the type
of pay, benefits, and legal protections to which the affected individuals are entitled.

So we still have around 30,000 troops deployed, that is an estimated Corp of people deployed. For 2021 Seven brigades will rotate to replace other brigades. One of the brigades being relieved, is a National Guard Brigade in Kuwait. The active duty has a 450,000 +/- size force, and yet it needs to siphon 30,000 form the Guard to perform its duties? Sorry I don't buy it. I don't know about the AD not doing anything but the Guard (and the Reserve) seem to be out doing things they were never intended to do.

Just a warning to those soldiers who enlist for the NG or go there after serving on active duty. We have had enough of UNDECLARED and unjust wars.
