The “Other Side” Is Not Dumb.

I can remember having a discussion with a LTC from the Coldstream Guards when I was a Major. He was extolling the virtues of British Arms during the War of the Rebellion against the Colonials. I respectfully reminded him that the Colonialists won in the end because we refused to lose. We may have been just a bunch of ill mannered country bumpkins - but we were fighting for our freedom and in the end that was the margin of victory

This is very true. I have one very trusted person at work whom I can talk with this sort of thing on, all kinds of political and religious issues really. On many issues we are the opposite, and in some cases very much so. But we have developed a rapport where we can discuss our opinions candidly and safely with each other. For example, he's a young earth creationists and I am not.

You know what? Sometimes he's right. Sometimes, he agrees I'm right, sometimes we come to a middle ground and sometimes we just agree to disagree. The key is to be able to have those conversations with someone you trust and without a lot of judginess towards each other.
