I believe the problem with smart people is that they are not smart enough to know when they are being stupid.

Good article, that does point out the flaws in going with the best and brightest. It fairly well validates my experience in the civilian workforce. If the "smart people", depending on what that means are properly led, that can contribute much to an organization, BUT they can also create chaos effectively, also.

A few years back I watched a documentary about Enron, and the thing that I remember most was the interviews with CEO Jeffrey Skilling. He stated that during his admissions interview for Harvard Business School, he was asked if he was smart, to which he replied, "I'm f*cking smart."

PFC Al Sethre - I had one of these some years back, during a performance evaluation he told me I couldn't tell him how to think. I told him he could think as he pleased, but if he ever planned to be promoted he would listen to my comments on improving. Saw him years later and he managed to become a low level manager. But he was still smart.

I really enjoyed that. Emotional intelligence and the ability to relate to your team is a critical piece of balance in the work environment. Who likes someone who looks down on those with less smarts, money, or good looks? I have found those who pretend to be something are usually insecure about themselves. Bullies usually have those issues. But super smart people don't always succeed and are quickly bored with mundane routine or mediocrity.
