Through genealogy research, I learned that one of my direct male ancestors (the son of one of the founders of Farmington CT) served in a militia company engaged against the Indians in King Philip's War. He was wounded in a battle up in Massachusetts and, according to family lore, was awarded a walking stick by King James (wish I knew where that thing is!!). An excellent book about King Philip's War is Douglas Edward Leach's "Flintlock and Tomahawk: New England in King Philip's War" (Norton, 1958), which can probably be had on the used book market for not much money.
