Ground effect is interesting business. There was a small airstrip near our base camp where the Air Force flew Birddogs and Beavers. The Beavers had a helluva time landing because the ground effect would keep them off the runway. Pilots had to almost fly the damn things into the ground

I used to jump the de Havilland U-6A Beaver (and its big brother, the de Havilland U-1A Otter) all the time, so I never had to worry about the landing part! The Beaver and the Otter would land right on the DZ, get another load of jumpers, and go right back up! The photos are of a Beaver and an Otter I actually jumped, c. 1970.

LTC Stephen C. - I didn't say it was a bad plane. In fact, I believe it is quite popular with Bush Pilots. It was simply funny watching one flying a few feet off the ground for the entire length of the runway then circling to try again

I agree, CPT Jack Durish. In fact, I think it's a great plane. It's considered one of the most reliable aircraft ever built, and as you say, is still quite popular with bush pilots.
