On May 13, 1939, the SS St Louis departed Hamburg with 937 Jewish fugitives. They would be denied entry in Cuba, the United States, and Canada. Eventually they were returned to Europe where many died in Nazi death camps. The United States State Department formally apologized to the survivors in 2012. Canada apologized in 2018.
