A fascinating article responding to the oft-shared pictures of "pre-Afghanistan/Iran/Iraq" with contemporary images. Rather than depict the reality, these memes actually distort the social conditions present of the 60's and 70's in these Muslim-majority nations. Not only that, but it superficially ties the notion of "freedom" to showing skin.
The truth is, that the 'before' pictures only represent a small portion of these nations' women during those times, whereas today, women from all classes have greater access to education and employment than before. For example, Iran now has 55% of women joining university and obtaining jobs, versus 1% during the U.S. backed Shah.
This is not to say that many Muslim majority societies today are somehow "better" in every way shape and form. However, the use of these memes only helps to promote Kipling's 'White Man's Burden' and the continued dehumanization and mass slaughter of Muslims around the world.
In summary: These miniskirts are no sign of civility, but a sign of a perverse superiority complex that needs to stay in the past where it belongs. #PleaseReflect
