COL Mikel J. Burroughs I love associating with veterans & their families. No seriously, LOVE it! As a foreigner it's always nice to make new friends with those who have travelled the world or experienced life in other cultures. Makes for an immediate sense of affinity with me, when I'm able to recognize in a new friend that open mindedness that comes from having different perceptions about life, due to being exposed to the variety out there. Also as a lover of history & action movies... I literally could sit & listen to my WWII or Vietnam vets talk about their experiences all weekend long! Can't wait until I'm caring for more of our more recent veterans... will just have to suffice with my movies in the meantime! No seriously, when I'm at work... I barely spend any time at the nurse's station (associating with my workmates!) Instead... I'm at my patients besides - lapping up every second of their wartime stories... asking questions to learn what they're all about & what they've done since their time in service! Love discovering the depth to my heroes & heroines! Makes me feel relevant... just by living vicariously through them!

Wanda Afualo-Carey Well Wanda I feel exactly the same way as you. So much that I wrote a book called, "Signs of Hope for the Military: In and Out of the Trenches of Life." One section of the book is all interviews with veterans of all ages. I have some WWI, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan, veterans. Some stories are vert sad; some have some humor. I will let you know when it is published.

Thanks COL Mikel J. Burroughs for sharing n intriguing perspective. To be honest for those of us who spent a career of 20 to 30 years in the military service of this nation, getting involved with other veterans is as natural as walking and talking.
The challenge tends to be our ability to spend time with other veterans.

My wife retired in 2014 after working for 35 years at VA Medical Centers in Gainesville and Miami, Florida. She enjoyed and had a lot of satisfaction in assisting veterans while they were at the VAMC for their medical treatment. The letters of appreciation she received from veterans she assisted are more important to her than all the superior performance awards the VA gave her over her career.
My wife and I were career VA employees because both of us enjoyed working with, being around and assisting veterans and their families. Since retiring from the VA we have discovered that special
relationship does not exist for us on the civilian side.

SPC Douglas Bolton - Doug, my wife Brenda and I want to thank you for
your very kind words. We worked at the VA to help the veterans who came through the
hospital doors and for us it was more than just a job it was what we enjoyed doing.
I know you walk that extra mile to help veterans and you hold a special place among
all veterans. Much respect to you Doug.
