I've served on a Liberty ship just like that. It ranks as probably the worst experience I've had at sea. Modern ships, crew all have their own staterooms and heads. That was the only merchant I've been on where I had to share heads with the whole crew. My 'stateroom' was intended for 4, when the crews were much larger. That, at least, was just me, but there were 4 bunks in it. That was singularly the worst 'housing' experience I've had outside of the Navy. Those men, back then...most can't even imagine the sacrifice.
