There are 17 explanations but the writer misses the most obvious and correct one. God has a plan that is unfolding day after day. Christians are told to pray but not in an attempt to try to change God's plan for the world but to be in alignment with it. The Lords Prayer is a simple example of this:

“ Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from the evil one"

We should pray but pray for God's will to be done (Your kingdom come, your will be done). We don't know God's will for all things so we pray for things we might like to see or have happen but that is our will or desire not necessarily his.

Using a study of outcomes of patients or people prayed for as proof for or against God or prayer is misguided at best. We are commanded to pray not to change his plan but because he commanded us to pray to him.

Cpl Jeff N. Since it is unknowable/untestable, it is neither obvious or correct that god has a plan. The odds go down even more because there are many supposed gods with followers that have similar claims.

1SG (Join to see) - We do not know God's will or His plan. To pray for things that may be contrary to the plan is not wise. You pray for his will to be done and to help you deal with the things that happen and to give you peace and solace through it.

The misunderstanding about the purpose and efficacy of prayer is widespread in our culture. Many think if they ask, they will/should get what they ask for. Nothing could be further from the truth. If their prayer aligns with Gods will, they will get what they prayed for.

Cpl Jeff N. - We don't even know if the foundational question/assertion that a god or 1,000's of gods exist(s) is true/false.

You mean YOU don't know if God exists or not. Many of us do.

I am a Christian believer. I choose to walk in the unproven faith that I adhere to and respect as true. Period.

An untestable/unfalsifiable claim/argument is a weak one.
