There Is a Real-Life 'Viper,' and He Made a Cameo in 'Top Gun'

I do love these cameos. It's a sneaky way to pay tribute even more to the folks you are already paying tribute to with these films.

The real Chuck Yeager was the bartender at Panchos in The Right Stuff. The real Jim Lovell was the Captain on the Aircraft Carrier who shook Tom Hanks' hand at the end of Apollo 13. I'm sure there are many more, but now the Top Gun one goes into my list of the coolest.
