There's a call to add thousands more Marines. Here's how it might work

You can't really add Marines. They are either there or they are not. Getting them on the yellow footprints is a different issue.

We had a charter to Camp Pendleton back in 1987 or ’88. It was a Boeing 707. It was ancient. I told Sergeant Cunningham, “I don’t want to fly in this plane.”
About the time they got it buttoned up, fire alarms started going off in the cabin. The stewardesses were throwing open all the cabinets in the galley. Smoke was spreading. It was thick in the back of the aircraft. The pilot taxied to the end of the runway, turned onto the active and took off – with an apparent fire in the cabin. Not a word was spoken by any of the 150 or so Marines. That’s what I mean. You either have that or you don’t. If it had been civilians there would have been shrieking panic going on.
As soon as the plane left the ground, the smoke was visibly pulled out of the cabin in just a few seconds. The pilot came on the intercom and said, “Oh sorry. We didn’t realize how bad it was in the back.”

PO2 Mark Saffell I was active duty when we had 200,000+ Marines and it always seemed we were short on manpower. Marines have adapted to the smaller force but how much is too much of tightening the belt. Especially when we have aircraft down.

We don't need a larger Marine Corps. We have a specific mission and we need a large enough Corps to accomplish that mission. Marine Corps leadership has repeatedly stated/testified that we don't need more Marines, we just need to maintain the highest quality Corps possible. Spend the money on training, equipment, maintenance/repairs, and MWR instead of adding more people.
