I don't doubt the veracity of this claim, however as it is widely known/open-source that the US sponsored & funded the Muhajadeen in Afghanistan when the Soviets invaded that country in the late 1970s. This Muhajadeen included Osama Bin Laden, who was one of the leaders of that rebel group, which we gave arms & ammunition (including Stinger missiles) to.

The Muhajadeen eventually became the Taliban, who took over the after the Soviets left Afghanistan.

It is generally known that the CIA and/or the State Department funds countries and groups that the US Defense Department opposes. Heck, in Syria there were various rebel groups that were on different sides that we fighting each other- both funded by the US. This is considered open source, and has been discussed on various news sites: http://www.latimes.com/world/middleeast/la-fg-cia-pentagon-isis-20160327-story.html

The story provides no evidence other than a “spokeswoman” saying items were stolen? Even if they were it shows no direct support, only that shipments were stolen.

Although the headline indicates otherwise, there is no evidence presented that says the Pentagon sponsored the Taliban. The author says there is, but the only claim is that weapons have been stolen. No kidding, of course they have. We've also sold weapons to other countries that's been later used against us. That didn't make us their sponsor. That doesn't mean the Pentagon sponsored the Taliban. It is an opinion article using a ridiculous headline for attention.
