Very interesting times and people. The epitome of "no pain no gain" training might be training barefoot on thorny ground to "harden the feet"! It was clearly no picnic even though it is true that being barefoot makes anyone much more maneuverable. I know it sounds sort of strange, but I have often thought about footgear that would fit like a thin glove but protect the bottom of the feet . . . maybe something like flexible kevlar soles. I don't know enough about material science and what's new in the field to speculate, but in some environments it could be useful.
