No such thing as a Russian mercenary in Syria, they are there on behalf of the Russian government "unofficially".
Just like in the Crimea and Ukraine.

Kind of like those American mercenaries flying for the Chinese back before Pearl Harbor, and the Lincoln Brigade - and, in much smaller numbers, the guys who got hung out to dry in Angola, eh?

They sent in an armored column with no artillery or air support, and probably not much of an infantry escort. That's as much counter to Red Army doctrine as it is to ours, so aside from proving that there is (or, more likely, used to be) a Russian equivalent of General Custer, this just dances us closer to stumbling into a non-proxy war with Russia.
