Experience with True life and death decision making, combined with high risk missions and memories of loss and destruction require special coping measures which should be taught in advance. IMHO. We had no prior training about this prior to combat in Vietnam.
Included with that instructon should be the dangers of introducing drugs or alcohol into those experiences. We were more-or-less "encouraged" to drink alcohol in my line of work - especially in Vietnam, when I was still underage. Don't get me wrong, I was a willing participant, but my actions later brought a certain amount of guilt and remorse into my memories.
