PO1 Tony Holland Not much different from the old Chief Petty Officer (CPO, E-7) initiation which takes place upon selection to CPO. The event occurs as a trial before King Neptune and his court and the audience is all the prior CPO's able to attend. Your defense attorney is usually a fresh new Junior Officer, who immediate declares you guilty as he/she is usually driven off very early in the Trial. I will never forget my own initiation and I am very proud to have gone through it. From what I am told, this CPO initiation does not occur in today's Navy!!! Gratefully they have not done away with the initiation of crossing the equator?

No, they have not done away with the Crossing of the Equator.

However, it's VERY structured with respect to it being totally voluntary to go through, and in my experience, was directly observed by the Captain.

Still...it was quite an experience, fun and a memory I'll cherish to my dying days.

Bit of advice...

If you go before King Neptune with "NEPTUNE SUCKS, POSEIDON RULES!" grease penciled across your chest, be prepared to go through it allllllllllll over again.

:D

CWO3 Dennis M. - Oh, yeah...and yeah, I had to go through it all over again!

It was a blast, though! The Captain later came up to me smiling and said "Good job!"

It's all what you make of it!
