These kinds of acts of heroism, love, and respect, I think did more to show the people of the US desegregation of the services was a good thing and started the downward spiral of KKK membership.

I had two Soldiers at Ord, one white and a racist (his words) from Arab, AL, and the other a black man from Detroit, MI who became the best of friends. And they are to this day.

Hi Trent. Evidently, you are their friends too if you've stayed in touch with them over the years. (Ord's been closed now for how many years? I went through BCT there in late 1966 and early 1967.)
