One of the divers where I worked was involved in recovery of the turret. He had some good stories of the operation.

Good thought. Actually he couldn't talk about what he was doing until after the fact, so some realty there I guess.

Fascinating history. Naval warfare was never the same. Two years earlier the CSS H. L. Hunley was finally raised -- the first successful combat submarine. (Successful in that the vessel and crew accomplished their mission. Less so in that she killed every crew that ever sailed her.)

Submarines have been one of my autistic special interests since early childhood. While I was devouring every available detail about the Kursk, the Hunley was raised and transferred to the Warren Lasch Conservation Center, where they are making slow, steady and careful progress in recovery and restoration.

The Hunley's engine comprised several men turning a crank.

Thinking about volunteering to sit in a small metal tube, turning a crank under water in order to approach the Housatonic to attach and detonate a barrel mine on 17 Feb 1864...

It gives new meaning to the American adaptation of the concept "Gung Ho".
