This isn’t a fair comparison. Ranger school is a leadership course. BUD/S is training that leads to graduates becoming members of the special operations community. I respect all who’ve gone through Ranger school, but make no mistake, the tab doesn’t make you a “Ranger.”

LTC William Gilmore - Ranger school does not make you Ranger Qualified. By Regulation the U.S. Army Ranger School at Fort Benning is a Leadership School. "The United States Army Ranger School is not organizationally affiliated with the 75th Ranger Regiment. Ranger School falls under control of the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command as a school open to most members of the United States Army, but the 75th Ranger Regiment is a Special Operations warfighting unit organized under the United States Army Special Operations Command. The two share a common heritage and subordinate battalions common lineage, and Ranger School is a requirement for all officers and NCOs of the 75th Ranger Regiment."
To be a leader with in the Ranger Regiment you must complete Ranger School i.e. Company Commander, Platoon Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Squad Leader.
In my day to become a Ranger with the 75 Ranger Regiment you had to complete RIP. Ranger Indoctrination Program. I believe it is now called RASP Ranger Assessment and Selection Program. Then they will be awarded the 75th Regimental Scroll.
However in recent years Medics and other medical Personnel are required to attend the Special Operations Combat Medic School. It was my understanding Prior to my retirement this course for medical personnel wishing to be assigned to the Ranger Regiment was taken in Lieu of RASP. If the Medic want to hold a Leadership Position with in the Ranger Regiment he would have to complete Ranger School for the Tab.
I was a Clinical advisor for the 18D Special Forces Medic School Candidates a number of my students completed the Special Operations Combat Medic School which at the time was a separate entity from the 18D Green Beret Program.

SSG Robert Peterson It doesn’t matter if I’ve been or not. I have countless friends with their tabs and they’ve all told me the same thing. Likewise, I served with several guys from Regiment including one of my team leaders. They all say the same thing: the school is a leadership course and being tabbed doesn’t make you a Ranger.

1. A Ranger tab doesn’t make someone a Ranger, serving in the Regiment does.
2. Ranger School is not a Special Operations pipeline, as stated by others it is a TRADOC leadership school.
3. Comparing RS to BUD/S is like comparing apples to dildos.

I've got the same thoughts on the SCOUT badge. Technically I'm a SCOUT (second enlistment - Scout Platoon Mosinee Wisconsin) However even though I cross-trained in explosive's got to learn about making a Swiss Harness and did repelling I mostly did Observational Op's and Radio Tech stuff. So am I a SCOUT? 8-)

Well done sir. My only question is this; Is there anyone out there, who went through BUD/S training when they were the age you were at Ranger school, and ten years later was exposed to Ranger school? I'm sure those ten years make a difference. Both mentally and physically.
