I have a theory, the old Guard in charge viewed the uprising as prelude to another "Cultural Revolution" and that is why they shut it down so violently. Yes Communists also react that way when their authority and power is challenged directly. However China has a special and recent history in this area that I think made the leaders especially paranoid of the student movement.
