He is delivering a very sober message to the Russians. You guys need to lay off the crazies of the world (Syria, Iran/Hezbollah etc) if you want to make headway with the rest of the world. The message from Trump/Tillerson is that Assad's days are numbered, he is making you look bad and he is a bad actor. Time to turn the page in Syria and save yourself in the process.
This is something Obama/Clinton/Kerry pussy footed around for many years. They wanted to play ball with Russia with reset buttons and the coded messages about having more flexibility after the election message to Putin (from Obama) etc. Clinton Inc., was busy taking money, happily from Russia for the Clinton Global Initiative (hey, how is that thing going these days?).
They drew fake red lines and then lied to us about Syria and Russia clearing out their chemical weapons stores. We all know it now. That is the nice thing about controlling all of the intelligence sources, you can lie and keep your dissimulation a secret all at the same time. Those chickens are coming home to roost now.
This is now the adults back in charge delivering he mail to the Russians. The democrats are still stuck on collusion conversations when the rest of the folks with functioning brain stems have moved on. Trump is doing to Russia what Obama never had the courage or fortitude to do, call BS on the BS, and send his Secretary of State to Russia to call BS to their face.

Not that easy. The crazies buy tons of their stuff. Can a "deal" be gotten from Moscow? Sure. But what will the price be? What can we woo the Russians with? They already provide most of the EU's gas and are about to do the same to China.
Again...not to take the shine off of it, but the man's already rolling in the Lenins (Benjamins) and Syria is one of their best customers. So it will be interesting to see how Russia "takes" our message...

PO3 Donald Murphy - Syria is a good customer perhaps for military surplus. The west is a great customer for their petroleum industry as well as external investment in Russia. How many manufacturing plants or joint ventures or oil derricks will Syria put in Russia? The answer is zero. How much oil will Syria buy? Very little compared to the west.
Syria is a cold war geopolitical ally of Russia. Russia wants allies in the middle east as they want influence there and want to counter our influence, fair enough. Syria, however, is crushing their public relations battle with the west not that it has been great but Russia needs foreign investment not just military surplus customers.
The US with our oil reserves and a new found desire (with Trump) to put in pipelines and increase production can lay a major hurt in Russia if the price of oil drops on the market due to higher levels of production. They need the west, long term, far more than they need Assad in Syria. I think they are waking up to that reality after having it finally poked in their face.

Cpl Jeff N. - Some true statements but don't lump "America" and "The West" in the same bin. "The West" as in Europe, could care less what goes on in the Middle East. Now our lumping exists because they will raise their fists when we do, yell when we do, pass motions and decrees when we do, but little else. You need only look at Libya. NATO "stood by us" but the moment the mandated funds ran out, NATO stayed home. So our goals for the Middle East, aren't necessarily Europe's goals. And Russia is a shadow EU member (on account of gas that they supply).
Syria is a great market for mil-toys for Russia. And they are an ally of Russia's - old or not. China is dealing with Russia to put the same EU gas into China. Should that happen, Russia's EU gas and Chinese gas will be more money than anyone can count. So its really anyone's guess as to why Russia is in Syria. It can't be for influence as they have no desires in the ME. It can't be for sales as the EU and soon to be China will purchase more of their goods than the ME could ever.

Well - we'll see where he gets with that. That's like telling someone not to shop at Walmart anymore. Okay...with what incentive? What will America incentive-ize Russia with for not supporting their "Israel?" For all the cheering at NK-China, the bottom line is that we agreed to sell China coal at a better rate and agreed to buy more of their stuff. And - not to be crass - but if thats what it takes, then thats what it takes. So while govment is "holding talks" "pushing" etc, only an idiot expects a deal from Russia without a "deal" in return.
