One interesting even from My own family is My great Grandmother's brother, was 1st Mate on a ship that was sunk by a German U boat just prior to the US entering WWI. and was adrift in a life boat with other members of the crew for 3 days before they were rescued. That relative, later Captain Benjamin O'Connell had skippered a number of steamships The U boat that sunk them that German Captain had sunk 65 ships.
