Good story. One thing that is often overlooked is your belt. If you wear a belt (and you always should) then it can make a good weapon as well. Buy a heavy duty leather belt with a metal buckle. You can take it off and use it in close quarters if necessary.

I don't make a habit of carrying a knife as I go to the airport too much. You have that in your pocket or briefcase and the TSA agents have something to get all worked up about and go to defcon 1 on you.

When Im garrison I always have a folding knife and my SOG multitool. I know everyone swears by Gerbers, but that SOG has held up to abuse by me and my platoon members. In fact yesterday my chief threw it at the door of track next to us since they kept throwing Skittles at us and there wasnt a dent nor scratch on it. Plus I like how easy it is to customize or replace the individual tools on it.
