To me the most significant event was in 1945: WWII - Officially known as the "Demolitions on Reich Territory Decree," Adolf Hitler orders the destruction of German facilities to prevent their use by Allied forces in his so-called "Nero Decree".
This action was in part at attempt to keep the western allies from crossing the Rhine River.
That action caused many of the bridges to be blown as the German army retreated across the Rhine.
The race for the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen was a notable result of this decree.
