My advice to a Junior SWO is that ship driving is everything. You will have time to become Tactically proficient in the Department Head tours but you have to learn how to drive while on your Division Officer assignments. While I do not understand this "student trainees" term, I mean where do they all sleep? I would recommend that you cross deck to another ship in your squadron if you are not getting the opportunity to drive on your ship. Also COs one of your top priorities should be to train your wardroom so the next flight of officers has the same opportunities that you got. You can always do maneuvers at sea with another ship to train your JOs on ship handling, going along side etc... Avail yourself of the ship simulators and any other ways to gain this experience.

Great information for me as an Ensign in SWOS BDOC, who hasn't gotten to my ship yet!

Never seemed to have that problem (too many JOs) when there were flight quarters, plane guard, boats in the water etc etc. I guess my advice would be to make yourself stand out as a JOOD by getting an EOOW letter during down time. This can make you look sharp to the OOD and Captain plus it builds trust and confidence. I recall getting a lot of individual training from my COs and Department Head OODs...and most importantly my CPOs.
