While I agree that Trump's apparent 'unpredictability' is probably a factor, I believe that Trump's leveraging of and willingness to take on China over nK and economic issues ... coupled with his demonstrated willingness to put steel on target (think Syria and chem weapons use) when a so-called 'red line' is crossed had at least as much to do with it. Kim Jung Un's choo-choo didn't go to Beijing, China in late March for a tea ceremony. My personal belief is that Xi summoned him for a counselling session and to plot a course ahead. Rattling sabers is one thing ... but when nK bellicosity starts impacting on economics in China and relations between China and the U.S. and Trump paints Xi as having difficulty controlling his neighbor, that's another story altogether.
