I vote bring them back! I’m glad someone received their stellar OER/NCOER bullet for proposing and implementing the idea, but it’s true, it’s not what the Army needed. I was astounded when Soldiers reported after AIT to my unit undisciplined and with lack of customs and courtesies (appearance out of regulation (hair, nails, and piercings on their face), no motivation, failing their first APFT, not saluting, acting like they’re back on the block, acting entitled).
Entry/AIT training is not meant to integrate Soldiers’ civilian lifestyle into military culture. You can’t be the same person in the military as you are at home with your family. We can’t compromise mission effectiveness and success for all Soldiers’ wants. For example, why are cell phones allowed in training? Because the Soldier was upset for being unable to communicate with their family more than once a week, and someone wanted to increase morale? What happened to remaining focused on training? Which goal is priority (training or morale)? What other ways can you increase morale without compromising quality training? If you can’t handle nine weeks with limited communication, how will you handle 9+ months?
I’m a firm believer in Soldiers first, mission always. I’m referring to training in this discussion.
The Army needs quality Soldiers, what we lack in the recruiting process can be adjusted with drill sergeants. As MAJ Payne would say, “Move it, you turds! You'll get no sympathy from me! You want sympathy, look in the dictionary between sh** and syphilis! You there! Tell Marlee Matlin's son to get across that rope before I hang him with it!“

I totally agree, I had the unfortunate pleasure of attending some training at Ft. Lee twice in 2013 and was shocked at the behavior and lack of military discipline exhibited by AIT soldiers on that post. I was like a college campus on the weekends.

It sounds as the solution to the discipline problem is not to bring drill sergeants to the AIT units .it's with the NCO's there, the CSM and the !SG's need to tighten Up.
