This song "Many a Mile to Freedom" by Traffic has soothed me since I first used to listen to it as a cadet at West Point in the late 1970s.
This year Memorial Day has hit me like a raw nerve or a festering wound would. Memories flood back to me at times of days long gone by.
This song was written as a love song, but the "many a mile to freedom" reminds me of long marches and "Then together we flow like the river" reminds me that military units can flow together like a well-oiled machine or indeed like a river.

When I was a lad "Shootout at the Fantasy Factory" was the first Traffic cassette I owned. Then I discovered the Dear Mr. Fantasy, Low Spark of High Heeled Boys and John Barleycorn Must Die.
