One thing also in the setting of farms and dogs killing domestic farm animals its not exactly rare to go out and shoot the dog. In many place the laws provide for this as a legitimate use of the firearms including dogs attacking or even worrying farm animals. You don't expect people so well hidden you can't even see them especially if they are on Your own farm property if that had been the case although the article didn't say it was.
