The cost of war tends to be widespread TSgt Joe C.. In this case the requirement to use substandard coal most likely led to the death by asphyxiation of the roughly 520 passengers from Salerno. Coincidentally, the beaches at Salerno was the site of the first assault on the Italian mainland.
My parents were teenagers in England during the war and recounted the impact of wartime shortages as rationing restricted many items. Spam became a staple and tinned everything was the way most food was obtained.
