My thought...
I'd post this photo, and any additional info (markings/writings in/on the ring), on Facebook.
Starting WITH...the Marine Corps. and Purple Heart (MOPH) sites, in addition TO...applicable (Marines, MOPH...again) Internet WEBSITES, as there are PLENTY of BOTH..both on FB, AND the Internet.
WHEN (vs IF) the rings "prospective" owner contacts the finder, I'd ALSO note 1, or more, possible "markings" that might make THIS one different from any OTHER like ring, that ONLY it's owner would KNOW about. For ID purposes. Just saying...

Inside the band on the ring, there should be a makers mark (such as Balfour). You can contact the company, and they can locate the record for the buyer, and hopefully find the owner...
