Hahahahaha! This was apparently said without any sense of irony whatsoever -- from the article:

Schumer’s spokesman said in an email, “This is a shameless attempt by the president to distract from the Trump shutdown. Rather than campaigning, he should do his job and negotiate a deal to open the government address the needs of the American people.”

The astute person will note that this shutdown is happening exactly because Senator Schumer and fellow Democrats are trying to negotiate a deal to address the needs of NOT the American people.
